MURTI

Melbourne Fringe Festival 2015

1st October, Singular evening only

The Blender Studios

10 Franklin St, Melbourne

MURTI is an interactive installation which invites a communal pouring of paint upon a Hindu icon. This is an opportunity for people to participate, learn and experience migrated rituals from South-Asia through the simple gesture of pouring paint. It is a work that provides fluidity between new and old, near and far, sacred and profane, asking - what is sacredness? How do we express it?

A life-size phallic statue, the symbol of life, the most

revered God of India - the Shiva Lingam - sits amidst an urban

landscape awaiting its consecration by layers of thick and

glossy paint poured by the hands of passers by.

This is a celebration of life - a bizarre ode to an ancient Hindu ritual.
