Offerings 2025 – Devika Bilimoria | Durational Performance Installation at Whitechapel Gallery

Short Throat, 2025

Short Throat, 2025. Devika Bilimoria. Video Still.
4K Video, Colour, Stereo, 22’00’’

In Short-Throat (2025), the body becomes an intensified relational form. I’m thinking with Elizabeth Grosz, where the body is not a fixed identity but a field of forces, sensations, and becomings. The work attends to what happens between—between the heat of the sun, the melting ice cream, the skin, and the camera’s gaze. These exchanges are not symbolic but affective; they operate through intensities that exceed intention. The slow and ritualised, durational act of holding and touching the ice cream amplifies this entanglement of matter and desire, where melting becomes a form of communication. I’ve been thinking about how durational performance could be a form of Camp, not as irony, but as an aesthetic of heightened presence, where excess and endurance coexist. In this sense, Camp becomes a way of attending to time as artifice, to performance as a mode of amplified relationality. The work stages an intimacy between body and climate that resists separation—an ongoing choreography of relation, where affect, artifice, and environment co-compose the experience of becoming.

Performed 26th September 2024 in 31 degrees celsius next to Pub El Molion de Blanca along the Segura river of Blanca, Spain, during ON DURATION residency, curated by Raegan Truax at AADK Spain.
